CD FLUTE (CARDBOARD FLUTE)

Difficulty: 4 of 5

CAUTION: When cutting holes in the flute, we need the help / supervision of an adult!

WE NEED:

  • a stiff cardboard tube with a diameter of approximately 4 cm and a length of at least 34 cm (such tubes are used textile bales and obtained in textile stores)
  • 3 old CDs,
  • a wooden stick with a diameter of about 3,5 cm (so that it fits into the inner diameter of the tube and it can be pushed in) ,
  • strong contact adhesive,
  • hot-glue gun,
  • alcohol marker,
  • stronger scissors,
  • leather hole punch, 7 mm,
  • electric drill,
  • hand saw (blade for metal, small teeth),
  • measuring tape,
  • safety gloves.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUILDING:

  1. On one of the CD, mark the cord with a length of 3 cm on it’s the outer rim. Below it, in the center, mark the 1 cm chord on the rim of the inner hole of the CD. We connect the points of the sector. cd_mere
  2. We cut the sector out with scissors along those lines.cd_odreza
  3. The CDs are glued together: the edges of the upper and lower CD are aligned, and the middle CD,  from which we have cut the sector,  is displaced from the center for about 3 mm.We let  for the glue to dry, while we will create a mouthpiece for our flute.cd_zareza
  4. Cut off a piece of 34 cm from the cardboard tube with metal saw.
  5. On the cardboard tube, we mark the place where we will stick the mouthpiece, built from CD. From this location we measure the lengths: 10.8 cm, 14.8 cm, 17.8 cm, 19.5 cm, and 23.0 cm.
  6. The punch is chucked into a  drilling machine (like an ordinary drill bit).
  7. The cardboard tube is pushed on a wooden stick. With one hand, it is strongly pushed against the bench top. With the other hand, with a drilling machine on which there is a puncher , press firmly and cut out the hole from the cardboard core. CAUTION: For safety, use protective gloves. With a puncher, we can make smooth round holes, while using an ordinary drill bit will break the edges of the holes.cd_flavta
  8. On the end of the tube,  which we have previously labeled,  attach the CD with hot glue, so that the hole in the middle of the CD-disks is positioned in the center axix of the tube.It is important that the notch at the edge of the CD disks is located on the opposite side  of the holes on the pipe. (i.e. at 180 deg).

CD-flute is taken in our hands and the hole on the edge of the CD-disks  is placed on the lips. We slightly lift our chin so that we can blow straight into the opening. We shall hear a note E. When fingers of both hands close other holes, we hear note G (basic tone), A, H, C and D will sound. If we close all the holes and blow a bit stronger, the octave of the base ton G1 will be heard.

CD-flute is an aerophone, which has a slightly softer tone due to the width of the pipe. It is similar to the Japanese bamboo flute  shakuhachi.

NOTICE: It is permitted to make the instrument according to these instructions exclusively for NON-COMMERCIAL purposes, when no activity contributes to earnings (e.g.  in kindergartens, schools or free on workshops).
