Moped

Difficulty: 2 out of 5

YOU WILL NEED:

  • a sheet of smooth and thicker paper, 18 cm x 18 cm (old poster or the cover of a magazine)
  • a smooth round rod or tube, with a diameter of 1 cm and a length of about 25 cm
  • scotch tape
  • scissors

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Roll the paper diagonally around the rod, and glue it at the end. Instrumen-a-week (3): Mofa Photo: Peter KusWhen you remove the coil from the rod, you get a paper tube with pointed ends.Instrumen-a-week (3): Mofa Photo: Peter Kus
  2. Cut the pointed ends carefully with the scissors but leave a narrow, 2-3 mm wide at the back.Instrumen-a-week (3): MofaPhoto: Peter Kus
  3. At each end you will get one triangle, which should be opened wide and gently tapped with your index finger.Instrumen-a-week (3): Mofa Photo: Peter Kus
  4. Insert one end of the tube into your mouth and pull back or put to one side your tongue so you don’t touch the triangle with it. When you blow into the tube, the triangle will start to vibrate as a reed and produce low, clattering sound, similar to the sound of a moped. If you inhale lightly through the tube (through your mouth), the triangle on the opposite side of the tube will start to vibrate and produce another tone. Two different tones can be played on moped.

Moped is an aerophone and is a relative to the group of winds with single reeds (like clarinet and saxophone).
